The Ironmaster’s Challenge is an annual trail running event hosted by the Central PA Conservancy (CPC) in cooperation with the Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club.  Participants in this spring event experience the splendor of Pennsylvania’s natural beauty as they traverse the trails in Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Michaux State Forest, and the Tumbling Run Preserve.

The Ironmaster’s Challenge Events include:

  • 50K Ultra
  • 15K Challenge

These events start at the Furnace Stack Pavilion and end at the Ironmaster’s Mansion at Pine Grove Furnace State Park.  Radio communications, professional timing, food and water checkpoints, medical support, goody bag with t-shirt, and a festive finish-line picnic are provided with your event registration. The Ironmaster’s Challenge serves as the CPC’s biggest annual fundraiser and helps to support the ongoing maintenance of the Ironmaster’s Mansion, in addition to programs and operations of the Central Pennsylvania Conservancy. The Goddard Leadership Legacy Institute

The Goddard Leadership Legacy Institute is a residential environmental leadership program for youth ages 13-15, coordinated by the Central Pennsylvania Conservancy and hosted at the Ironmaster’s Mansion.  The program provides youth with opportunities to become immersed in the natural, scenic, historic, agricultural and recreational resources of the South Mountain Landscape while learning key lessons in leadership and citizenship from area teachers, practitioners, and community leaders.  The program website offers online registration,

Historic Tours of the Ironmaster’s Mansion

Sundays, 3 pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day

The 1829 Ironmaster’s Mansion at Pine Grove Furnace is steeped in history, operating from the American Industrial Revolution through the American Civil War to the close of the 19th century. Starting Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, historic tours of the Mansion are offered by the resident Innkeeper every Sunday at 3 p.m. Though the tours are free and open to the public, a donation to support the upkeep of the facility is much appreciated. The tours start on the south porch of the Mansion.

Pine Grove Furnace State Park has been a free place for people to enjoy the outdoors for 100 years.  Help celebrate the park by hiking all of its trails in one day!


Fall Furnace Fest at Pine Grove Furnace State Park

The Fall Furnace Fest is held each year at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, and includes craft and food vendors, demonstrations of charcoal making, iron forging, candle making, apple cider pressing, pumpkin carving, live music, and much, much more.  The Ironmaster’s Mansion hosts arts and crafts for children.


Appalachian Trail Museum Programs

Appalachian Trail Museum Festival. The Museum will celebrate the unique culture and history of the Appalachian Trail with guest speakers and activities for all ages.
